Favourite Music Q3 2015

This one is a little early, but I’m going on holiday. Apologies to anyone releasing kickarse music in the last week of September ….  Because of my holiday (AUD .69c OMG) I took the pedal off acquiring new stuff the last couple of months, but this list is chockas with A list and numerous that will make my top 10 or 15 of the year.

Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin – Lost Time   The second of their albums together and as great as Common Ground was (robbed for the Grammy, sorry not sorry Johnny Winter), there’s an incredible electric energy about this one, plus a delicious selection of old blues (and a uptempo folky arrangement of “In New Orleans (Rising Sun Blues”). Hey, did you know a lot of old blues songs were actually about having sex even though they are about something else on the surface?  I would still place an album of Dave Alvin originals above basically anything else in this sorry world but I’m sure he’ll get around to recording one of those again and in the meantime this will put a smile on your dial (did I tell you about the time I dreamt Dave and I got married and he sent me out to buy gyoza? That was a great dream.)

Seeing them live in Sacramento, California on October 1st … squeeee ……

Shemekia Copeland – Outskirts of Love

Her albums started off very good and keep getting better.  “Drivin’ Out of Nashville” below is not quite representative of the more straight up blues of the album but it’s the best video and a lot fun (who doesn’t celebrate murdering sexual harassing music execs???).  Hard to argue with those lyrics ….

I’m driving out of Nashville

With a body in the trunk

Trying to figure out

The depths that I have sunk

I never hit the big time

But I went out with a bang

‘Cos country music ain’t nothing but the blues with a twang.

Dave Rawlings Machine – Nashville Obsolete

Kandia Crazy Horse – Stampede

Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats – self titled

Iris DeMent – The Trackless Woods

Ana Egge – Bright Shadows   I can’t find a recent video. I sought out Ana Egge a while back because I heard the song “River Under the Road” on the Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women album and I thought, holy shit Dave Alvin has written another amazing song. But it was IN FACT a song by Egge, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Sarah Brown.  So here is … a random bluegrass version of that song … (her new album is very good though!)

Mandolin Jubilee – Such Jubilee

Dan Bern – Hoody

Lindi Ortega – Faded Gloryville

Jackie Greene – Back to Birth

Jackie Green gets two because  doing random covers of “Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)” in cut off denims IS the way to my heart ….

Whitney Rose – Heartbreaker of the Year

Joe Ely – Panhandle Rambler

Can’t find any new album vids so here’s a classic

Thunderbitch – self titled

Side project of Brittany Howard of the Alabama Shakes …

Introducing … Darlene Love

Barrence Whitfield and the Savages – Under the Savage Sky

Fraser A  Gorman – Slow Gum  Straya

Patty Griffin – Servant of Love

Jason Isbell – Something More Than Free

Rayland Baxter – Imaginary Man
