I’m always on the lookout for new Central Asian music – from Tuva and other Turkic communities within Russia, from far western China, from Mongolia.
Mamer’s album on Real World came out a few years ago but I only just caught up with it. He’s from Xinjiang province in China and speaks Kazakh. His style has quiet a folky/singer-songwriter vibe and it’s fabulous. According to that link, “He also single-handedly kick-started China’s alt-country scene.” Go, Mamer!
For a grungier experience, I came across this free download of a live album by one of my favourite throatsinging outfits, Albert Kuzevin and Yat-Kha.
