So, Steve Earle By Amanda on November 7, 2008 6:59 AM | Permalink | Comments (6)
is on tomorrow night. This is the only review I can find of the three shows he's done so far. Melbourne was only last night though so ... anyone?
I remain to be convinced about the DJ.

I saw Steve Earle and his missus in Perth with a friend of mine who had not seen/heard SE before and therefore held no prior purist expectations.
So when the beat box guy came on, I'm initially thinking....ahhhhh ermmmmmm ok then.... lets see/hear what you got porky.
Meanwhile..said friend just locked right on into the groove without pre conceived prejudice.
and me, Im just thinking, "Sydney's gonna SO HATE this guy".
However.. "harcore troubador fans", expectation aside, I reckon it was akin to Dylan going electric in Newport.
The man made the record he wanted to make and he made it in NYC. Living in NYC is different to living in Tenessee.
The space is different.
The sound is different.
The air is different.
As different as Kraftwerk coming from Koln to The Hard Ons coming from Punchbowl.
Full credit to the new Johnny Cash/June Carter stance Steve and the missus seem comfortably settling into.
Alison glowed divine and had all the warm sincerity and manners you could expect of an Alabama beauty.
No wonder he's in love.
So if you don't get the vibe...chances are you would have also booed at Dylan with the Butterfield Blues band at Newport.
No matter how you may think with you would have responded after the affordability of hindsite.
Slightly in the negative, Steve and the drum button guys clothes looked like they came straight out of the laundry basket.(fair enough as Perth was the first stop after flying into OZ) Plus, drum button guy danced like a slug on mandrax.
All in all though..
Keep movin forward Steve.

A by the numbers backing doof doof track is akin to Dylan at Newport? Not in any sense whatsoever.
But I didn't mind the doof doof dude, it was really only on the new songs and I just don't care about those and the doof doof did not make me care any more, nor any less. It sounded OK.
And he did Pancho and Lefty (sans doof doof) in the encore so who gives a frack what happened before that.

Spoke to Steve and he said..."Nerds on teh internet always have something to complain about (the dj). I never met anyone with a girlfriend or a wife who had anything bad to say about the turntables. As a matter of fact, I think hating turntables is a racist idea and I would prefer racists don't come to my shows anyway."
Peace...

Indeed, I have neither a girlfriend nor a wife. I guess that explains it.

I wrote it up here. Despite my nervousness when he came on I thought the DJ worked well.
